Your heating and cooling system is a complex and very expensive part of your home. It handles high voltage and may use natural gas as well. Those energy sources make it quite dangerous for an untrained person to attempt repairs, but there are other reasons why you will want to leave AC repairs and heating system fixes to a professional technician.
1. Your System Is Under Warranty
If even the smallest thing is not working right with your warrantied system, just rely on an HVAC technician. Anything you do beyond normal operational steps to attempt to correct the problem could void your warranty. That means a future repair that could cost a lot of money will be your financial responsibility because you didn’t want to engage professional assistance. The warranty is there to protect you, so don’t sabotage it with attempts at DIY work.
If your system is under warranty, just turn to us at G. R. Freeman Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.. Don’t even pick up a screwdriver!
2. It Doesn’t Respond to Thermostat Steps
The thermostat is your control mechanism for the heating and cooling system. Anything that you need the system to do can be accomplished from this simple device. However, sometimes things can go wrong at the thermostat, with the most common being dead batteries. If your thermostat needs new batteries, you may see an unusually dim display, inaccurate temperature readings, or erratic system operation. If the system doesn’t work normally after you replace the batteries, enlist professional help.
There could also be issues with the settings on the thermostat, most commonly after a power outage. If you’re having HVAC issues and haven’t experienced a power outage, there is something more complex going on. A technician can sort it out.
3. The System Is Tripping Breakers
Your heating and cooling system is designed to operate normally with breakers of a specific size. The system should run properly without ever tripping a breaker. If you find the system is off and determine that a breaker has tripped, try turning it back on. If the situation persists, bring in a professional.
Tripped breakers indicate an electrical overload that could damage the system or even cause a fire. There is always a chance that a power surge or other issue could have tripped the breaker, but this will be an isolated incident if it happens. For that reason, you should not continuously reset the breaker if it continues to trip. Reset it once, and if it trips again, request assistance. Working on it yourself could get you electrocuted, damage your home’s electric system, or damage the HVAC equipment.
4. There’s Obvious Danger
As we already mentioned, a heating and cooling system can be a very dangerous thing. Issues with electricity and gas are to be taken very seriously. If you notice any kind of problems with these two fuels, call your HVAC contractor immediately. Examples could include smoke, burning odors, crackling or sparking sounds, gas odors, and of course, flames of any size. Trying to work on it yourself could cause a gas leak, or make an existing leak worse. This can even lead to an explosion risk, if gas is leaking and a spark or open flame comes into the equation. Some smells indicate electrical issues that can lead to shock or fire risk.
You may also see less dangerous but equally serious signs of a problem. These include roaring, whining, or clicking noises from the unit. There may be a deep humming or grinding sound, or you may detect that the indoor or outdoor unit is shaking or vibrating. Whenever you notice things that are out of the ordinary about your system, let a qualified technician check it out.
